Description

Collection of ninety five original letters written by Private von Bibra to his wife during service overseas with the 2nd AIF. Von Bibra served with 2/14 Battalion and was killed in action in Syria in June 1941. Additional items incorporated into collection as of May 2002: French produced map of Syria, 'Beyrouth - Damas - Baalbek', annotated in pencil 'Hill 1332. This map picked up by me at spot'; newscutting, article by Kenneth Slessor, in which reference is made to Pte von Bibra's death and burial in Syria; a photocopy of a typescript letter written by (VX16510) Staff Sergeant Victor Houldcroft (Press Camp, AIF) describing the circumstances of Pte von Bibra going missing in action during an attack by elements of the 2/14th Battalion on 'strongpost 1332' on 24 June 1941. Also, three undated photographs associated with Pte von Bibra: a portrait of him in civilian dress; in service uniform at a picnic near Puckapunyal, Victoria and a study of him in uniform in Acre.
