History / Summary

Awarded to Second Lieutenant Charles Selby Alfred Noad of 57 Battalion, AIF. The citation reads 'At Glencorse Wood on the night 25th/26th September 1917 this officer showed the greatest courage and initiative in handling his Company. The Battalion was moving up to connect with the right, which had been broken by an enemy counter attack. The enemy barrage was intense, and many of our officers, including the Company Commander, were casualties. 2nd Lieut. NOAD took charge and did most valuable work in protecting the flank. On the morning of 26th September he ably arranged his company into parties, and for two days and nights got forward water, ammunition and other necessaries for the front line. He set a fine example of courage and energy.' Lt Noad was born in Melbourne in March 1896 and enlisted in the AIF on 16 July 1915. He served with 57 Battalion and embarked for return to Australia on 9 December 1918. He enlisted again during the Second World War and served with the number V39529. He was discharged with the rank of captain on 26 March 1947.
