9 Sergeant Francis Wesley Tyler enlisted on 2 February 1916 and returned to Australia on 21 June 1919. He served with 11 Machine Gun Company, AIF and later with 3 Machine Gun Battalion, AIF. The recommendation for the award of his Military Medal reads:
'3rd Australian Machine Gun Battalion. 9 Corporal (T/Sgt) Francis Wesley Tyler "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Duting the operations in the vicinity of BRAY from Aug 22nd to Aug 26th [1918] this N.C.O. was in charge of signals at the Battalion Command Post. Through his untiring energy and tenacity of purpose, signal communication was maintained throughout the whole of these operations. He frequently left a place of safety during heavy enemy shelling and personally repaired the lines, thus setting a fine example to his linesmen. His gallant work proved to be, on more than one occasion, of vital importance to his battalion."'
