Studio portrait of Corporal (Cpl) Ian Scott McDowall, Citizens' Military Force, of Galloways Hill, Qld. On 22 December 1941, he enlisted in the 2nd AIF. He served as a Private with 1 Parachute Maintenance Platoon, AAOC, with the service number QX26044, and later with 1 Base Sub Area Details Depot. On 18 September 1945 he, along with 28 others, was among the crew and patients on RAAF Dakota A65-61, which crashed in Papua New Guinea. The RAAF was transferring wounded servicemen from Indonesia to Townsville when the plane crashed. In June 2005 the wreckage and remains were recovered and a military funeral held later that year.
