Description

Blue woollen WAAAF winter service dress tunic. The tunic has two pleated breast pockets with triple pointed flaps and two expanding hip pockets. Each pocket is fastened with small RAAF buttons and a ribbon bar is stitched above the left breast pocket denoting the British War Medal 1939-45 and the Australia Service Medal. The tunic is secured by black metal RAAF buttons and a fabric belt with a black plastic buckle. Rank insignia on the cuffs denotes the rank of Flight Officer. The lower right sleeve has three red service chevrons and the lower left has an RAAF eagle and a crown. A maker's label sewn below the collar reads ' V 375 MADE IN AUSTRALIA 1944 SIZE'.

History / Summary

This tunic belonged to Flight Officer (Flt Off) 94786 Coralie Marie Gordon of Adelaide, South Australia. Flt Off Gordon enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force on 18 March 1942 and was posted to 6 Fighter Sector Headquarters, Mt Lawley, Western Australia. She completed officer training at the School of Administration, Trinity College, Melbourne, receiving her commission in May 1943. She then worked in the Operations Room at 2 Fighter Sector Headquarters and 7 Fighter Sector Headquarters, Melbourne, until November 1944, when she was posted to the Allied Translator Intelligence Section, RAAF Command, Brisbane. Promoted to Flight Officer in January 1945, she then served at the Central Intelligence Unit as the editor of a weekly publication, 'The Objective Intelligence Report', until August 1945. She was discharged on 20 December 1945 and married 420562 Flying Officer William Dudley Hemmings DFC in April 1946.
