A section of the battle ground over which troops of the 1st Australian Brigade attacked on 18 September 1918 as part of the first battle to take the Hindenburg Outpost System, including former British lines, and the Hindenburg Farm Line. The whole operation was a big effort on a long front by one French and two British armies. The Australians, being in the centre of the Fourth Army, were at the centre of the onslaught. Their attacking line (4th and 1st Divisions) was the 12th Brigade, 4th Brigade, 3rd Brigade, and 1st Brigade from right to left. The view shows Cologne Farm and 'The Egg' (left), a quarry in which there were a number of dugouts, located on a hill which overlooked a considerable section of the Hindenburg fortified zone. This is the right hand image in a two part panorama. See E03348P for the combined image.
