Informal group portrait of five members of the 2/2 Anti Tank Regiment, 7th Australian Division, resting in the shade of an olive grove near the French fort of Merdjayoun with their 2 pounder anti-tank gun mounted on the back of a Chevrolet portee. They were responsible for destroying three Renault Type 35 tanks of the Chausseurs d'Afrique Regiment. This photograph was taken just after the signing of the Armistice in Syria on 12 July 1941. Identified left to right (back row): QX5123 Norman Andrew 'Lofty' Lofgren of Milton, Qld; QX7500 Sergeant Robert Alfred 'Alf' Cowley of Taringa, Qld; QX5651 William 'Bill' Bowman of Goondiwindi. After service in Syria, Cowley joined the RAAF in September 1942 and flew Lancasters with 218 Squadron. Front row: Driver Arthur Mase, of Tharaggie; 'Donger' Davies of Surat.
