Flying Officer James Alexander Saint-Smith
James Alexander Saint-Smith was a school teacher in New South Wales before he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on 6 January 1941. He trained as a pilot in Canada and England before joining No. 460 Squadron. Flying Officer Saint-Smith was the captain of Avro Lancaster bomber G for George (W4789) on its first operational sortie to Mannheim in Germany, on 6 December 1942. He flew the aircraft on another 12 occasions, using it as his regular aircraft for the remainder of his tour, which ended in March 1943. While part of No. 460 Squadron, Flying Officer Saint-Smith received a Distinguished Flying Medal for gallantry in a mission over Berlin. During a second tour of operations with No. 627 Squadron, Saint-Smith was killed in action on 29 June 1944 (his 73rd operation) when his aircraft crashed near Vaulx, Belgium. He is buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension in Picardie, France. Flying Officer Saint-Smith was posthumously awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross on 24 August 1944 for his 'conspicuous gallantry and determination' in successfully completing numerous sorties over Germany and France with 627 Squadron.
