Description

This folder contains 16 letters written or received by Field Marshal Lord William Birdwood between 27 June 1903 and 1 March 1937. Subjects discussed in these letters include Australian soldiers in Cairo, the importance of remaining at Gallipoli, Birdwood’s command, storms of November 1915, arrival of the 5th Army in Lille, the Australian experience of war at home, Birdwood’s post-war visits to Australia, returning to Anzac after the war, Turkish thoughts on the evacuation from Gallipoli, and plans for the opening of the Australian War Memorial. Amongst the correspondents in this series are Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, Charles Edwin Woodrow Bean and General Sir Ian Standish Monteith Hamilton.
