Mercedes 160 hp D.III 6 cylinder engine
A Mercedes D.III six-cylinder, in-line water cooled power plant rated at 160 horsepower. Marked on the front upper port side of the engine's crankcase is its serial number 'B.N. 705 M.N. 9 DIII GARANTIE BIS 12.8.18' On the upper port rear of the crank case is stamped M.N.37108
The serial number 37108 also appears on the carburettor casing, top central. A faint worn stencil reading ?05/9 is painted onto the lower port crankcase. Stamped on the front upper starboard side of the crank case is M.N.37108. The firing sequence for the cylinders is stamped onto the crank case on both sides near the cylinders. From the rear it reads: 4 2 6 3 5 1.
An arrow is engraved into the front of the crankcase shewing the direction of propellor movement. The two manufacturers' plates on the side of the crankcase are missing. Cast into the sump of the crankcase in large 50mm high characters is the number 32925
This engine was formerly fitted to Albatros D.Va single engine biplane scout/fighter aircraft, serial no. D5390/17 (RELAWM04806). It has been removed from the aircraft to lessen the structural load on the airframe.
