Source evaluation
Step 1: Create a check list of considerations for evaluating sources.
What makes a source credible? Examples may include the date of the source, the author or creator, the title, place of publication, the perspectives that are being represented, identification of bias, and whether the source is primary or secondary for example.
Step 2: Explore the following sources which comment on the situation in East Timor in 1999.
Students may like to work in pairs or small groups, evaluating one source each. Alternatively the sources can be examined as a class.
- Summarise the information provided by the source
- Decide whether or not the source is a useful tool for studying conflict in East Timor, outlining the reasons why
- Make a judgement about the credibility of the source
- What additional sources or perspectives do you think would enhance your understanding of the conflict in East Timor?
