Looking down on the Green Zone

HIGHLY COMMENDED

2023

acrylic on canvas

60 x 50 cm

This painting depicts the fertile areas around the rivers in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan, known as the Green Zone. The patchwork symbolises the topography of the area and the many ethnic and cultural elements that we could never fully understand. The big black marks represent the map-marking boundaries that we imposed on the area to try and create a semblance of order on the unknown.
