The Memorial’s Research Centre Digitised Collections team digitises archival collections at risk of deterioration. This process helps to preserve the original items and enables the selected collections to be accessed online in future.
The Memorial is seeking permission from the current copyright holders to publish articles and other material that has been written or created by the people listed below. This material is located in PR01216 Series 8 – Bullwinkel, Vivian (Lieutenant Colonel, 1915–2000). This is a collection of personal papers relating to the Second World War and post-war service of F31029 Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Statham (née Bullwinkel) AO MBE ARRC ED FRCNA, nursing sister and matron, and prisoner of war. The collection consists of diaries, papers, notebooks, recipes, letters, sketches, news clippings, photographs, certificates, and ephemera, split into eight themed series and relating to Bullwinkel’s early life, military service, prisoner of war experience, repatriation, awards, and her postwar work with the Red Cross and ex-service, nursing and other voluntary organisations.

George Beard, 30 December 1918–1 September 2003
George Ernest Beard was born 30 December 1918 in Cobar, NSW.
He enlisted with the 2/26th Infantry Battalion on 20 June 1940 and was given service number QX9600. The service record indicates that George served in Malaya and was declared a prisoner of war on 30 November 1943. George was recovered from Kranji Prison Camp on 19 September 1945, returning to Australia and discharged on 5 April 1946.
George Beard was a former president of the Queensland Ex Prisoner of War Association. According to James Cook University this association ceased operations in August 2001.
George Ernest Beard died on 1 September 2003 in Queensland.
Robert Hazlewood Savile-Kelsey, 8 November 1916–1 June 2011
Robert Hazlewood Savile-Kelsey, also known as Robert Haslewood Savile Kelsey, was born 8 November 1916 in Bowen, Queensland.
He enlisted with the 2/26th Infantry Battalion on 24 June 1940, and was given service number QX6461. The service record indicates that Robert served in Malaya and was declared a Prisoner Of War on 15 February 1942. Robert was recovered from Changi Prison Camp on 5 September 1945, returning to Australia and was discharged on 17 December 1945.
In 1949, Robert was married to Joan Hilda Edwards, who became known as Joan Hilda Kelsey; together they had four children.
Robert Haslewood Savile Kelsey died on 1 June 2011 in Brisbane.
Frank Hooper Legg, 26 June 1906–30 March 1966
Frank Hooper Legg, also known as Frank Legg, was born on 26 June 1906 in England to Ethel Annie Legg (née Hooper) and Francis Ellis Legg.
In 1929, Frank Hooper Legg was married to Evelyn Amy Bragg, who became known as Evelyn Amy Legg. This marriage produced one son, Richard Legg. Frank Hooper Legg later divorced and was remarried to Elva Henrietta Gregory, who became known Elva Henrietta Legg. This marriage did not produce children.
Frank enlisted with the 2/48th Infantry Battalion on 26 July 1940 and was given service number SX9652. The service record indicates that Frank served in the Middle East
Frank Hooper Legg was an Australian war correspondent and journalist.
Frank Hooper Legg died on 30 March 1966 in Sydney.
