Description

Studio portrait of five soldiers from the 4th Reinforcements of the 54th Battalion. Identified, left to right, back row: Bowers, Brown, Roe [believed to be 2132 William Henry Bowers, 2136 Ellis Arthur Hirst Brown, 2295 John Henry Roe]. Front row: 2134 Private (Pte) John Thomas Burrell and 2295 Pte Ferdinand Thomas Meurant. Pte Burrell enlisted on 18 March 1916 and was attached to the 4th Reinforcements. He embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Boorara on 19 August 1916. He was later medically downgraded and served with the Veterinary Hospital at Calais until June 1918. He was diagnosed as suffering from heart disease and returned to Australia in August 1918. He died on 21 October 1918 at No 11 Australian General Hospital at Caulfield.
