Description

Demonstrators sit outside Darwin Mall and protest against the Indonesian military occupation of East Timor and the associated violence. Banners and signs read 'Indonesian Military - out NOW !' , ' INDONESIA PLEASE OPEN YOUR MIND. DON'T KILL THE INNOCENTS ! ! !' and 'UN & AUSTRALIA DON'T BE LIKE AN ASSISTANT. IF YOU HAVE A BIT OF FEELING... PLEASE SAVE EAST TIMOR FROM THE ASSASSINS.' The demonstration took place prior to the first Australian troops being deployed to East Timor as part of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET), an Australian led international mission to bring peace and stability to East Timor under the United Nations mandate.
