Description

Model of a mobile folding bridge consisting of a trio of pivoting, scissor-action wooden U-frames, one of which is fitted with a pair of folded tin stub axles and wheels with rubber tyres. One of the wheels is missing. These frames act as the side rails, with the pair at one end also acting as folding locking devices. These each fold into a U-channel with a friction fit. The bridge proper is made up from four pivoting panels of timber slatting (serving as the roadway) with wire axles, formatted in a "W" shape. The deployment involves opening out the two end panels, disengaging the side rails, and pulling the two outer panels outwards. This lowers the central pair until the W shape flattens horizontally. The lower engles of the three U-frames are all reinforced with glued cotton tape, and the wood has been lightly varnished. The outer faces of the side rails on one side have all been stamped 'A. Worsfold' in ink. The unit expands from a compact 170mm H x 210mm W x 50mm D to a bridge 75mm H x 140mm W x 440 mm in length.
