Description

Studio portrait, taken before enlistment, of 19008 Sergeant (Sgt) Edward James Boyd, MM, 4th Division Signal Company, of Glebe, NSW. A telephone mechanic prior to enlisting on 1 March 1917, Sgt Boyd embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Themistocles with the 30th Reinforcements, 1st Divisional Signal Company on 4 August 1917. He was taken on strength of the 4th Division Signal Company on 15 March 1918. He was awarded the Military Medal for his actions on the night of 24-25 April 1918, when he maintained the Battalion's signal lines under heavy barrage fire. He was killed in action in France on 17 August 1918, aged 33.
