Pattern 1908 webbing haversack : Private W G Hoffman, 32 Battalion, AIF
Pattern 1908 webbing haversack with a top flap opening secured by a pair of straps and brass buckles. Stamped under the flap are the maker's details 'M.E.CO. 1916 [broad arrow]'. There is a tab with a brass buckle at each side of the opening. On the reverse of the haversack are two outwardly angled tabs with brass ends for attachment to the shoulder straps (RELAWM07759.001). At the base are two tabs with brass buckles. Handwritten on the reverse of the haversack is '3568 [illegible] D Coy 32'.
Associated with the service of 3568 Private William George Hoffman, a labourer from Adelaide, SA. Hoffman enlisted with D Company, 32 Battalion on 1 May 1916 and embarked for England on 12 August. He proceeded to France on 30 December. Hoffman wore this webbing equipment during an attack on the Hindenburg Line near Bellicourt on 29 September to 1 October 1918. Hoffman returned to Australia in August 1919 and was discharged on 2 October.
