Miniature Medals : Telegraphist J Swift, HMS Formidable, RN
Set of miniature medals mounted on a swing bar with pin fastening. The miniatures represent the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal and British War Medal 1939-45.
These miniature medals were worn by Mr Jack Swift on formal occasions in the years after the Second World War. During the war, Swift served in the Royal Navy as a telegraphist, aboard HMS Formidable. During leave in Sydney in 1945 he, along with fellow sailors, was invited to the home of Elizabeth 'Beth' Sheridan. Three months later, on 5 September, the couple wed at St Andrew's Cathedral.
In the intervening period, Swift had returned to sea, and Beth was only given a few days notice to organise the wedding. After the war, the Swifts settled in Sydney and were involved with activities at their local Returned and Services League (RSL) club. Swift wore these miniatures with his dinner suit when leading dancing lessons at the club.
