Diary of Richard Keith Phillips, 1914-1915
Diary relating to the First World War service of 1084 Private Richard Keith Phillips, 5th Battalion. This small handwritten diary contains entries from 21 October 1914 to 23 November 1915, with several minor notations from 1916. The diary covers: departure from Australia on HMAT Orvieto A3 in October 1914; the composition and positions of the first Australian Imperial Force (AIF) convoy to Egypt; life and routine aboard the Orvieto; notes on the battle of Coronel and the engagement between HMAS Sydney and SMS Emden at the Cocos Islands; picking up prisoners from the Emden; arrival and staging in Egypt; detailed notes on the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915; sketch of the positions of various warships and transport ships during the landing; experience at Gallipoli while serving as a pack driver with the battalion's transport section; various sketches and drawings. The last regular entry is for 23 November 1915 whilst Phillips is in the trenches at Gallipoli.
