Description

Letters relating to the First World War service of 2430 Lance Corporal Wilfred Denver Gallwey, 47th Battalion. The letters were written to various members of his immediate family between August and December 1917. In these letters, Gallwey writes of his participation in the fighting at Bullecourt and Messines, and the shell shock and trench fever that led to his evacuation to England. He also writes of his training in signals, including a lengthy account of his leave in London and into Scotland. Gallwey expresses pride in performing his duty and his belief in conscription, and records his disappointment in the failure of the 1917 plebiscite. He routinely writes of the progress of the war for his family at home. This file contains:
