Description

Diary relating to the First World War service of Captain Geoffrey Gordon McCrae, 7th Battalion. In this diary McCrae details his journey from Australia to Egypt on the troopship HMAT Hororata and his entries range from 18 October to 5 December 1914. The entries cover: his embarkation from Melbourne on 18 October; daily occurrences on board, weather conditions; positions of the other ships in the convoy; the convoy’s journey from Albany to Colombo; HMAS Sydney and its engagement with the German raider SMS Emden; the arrival at Colombo; his hospitalisation on board with a leg injury; the journey to and disembarking at Alexandria in Egypt.
