The entries in this diary span the period 23 May to 30 September 1917 and cover Richards’ transfer to England for medical treatment, his promotion to lieutenant, and his award of the Military Cross for his actions on 4 May 1917 during the Second Battle of Bullecourt. Also detailed is his return to the 1st Infantry Battalion in early August and subsequent return to England wounded in late September. This diary was originally bound by Richards into the last of four volumes and donated to the Australian War Memorial in 1933.
