Letters relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant Robert James Henderson, 13th Battalion. These letters were written from Henderson to his family between 5 January and 25 June 1917. The letters begin by detailing his time at No. 4 London General Hospital recovering from a serious wound to the leg he sustained in the fighting at Pozieres the previous year. Towards the end of his convalescence, Henderson takes leave to Scotland and writes of his sightseeing in Glasgow and Edinburgh. In March he is discharged from hospital and by the end of April is back in France with his battalion, writing that he is keen to be going back and that returning to his battalion feels like going home. Henderson remarks that in that time that he has been away from the battalion many of those that he knew have been killed. He writes of the fighting near Messines in June and the losses to the battalion. In the fighting, Henderson is once again wounded in the right thigh, causing him to remark that he should have died sixty times over by now. He is subsequently sent to the 2nd Anzac Corps Officers Rest House to recover and returns to his battalion at the end of June. This file contains:
