Operation Wing Fury, Force Extraction [Part 1 of 5] Aircrewman Perspective. A mission involving three UH60 Blackhawks, two US/AUS Chinooks, and two AH64 Apache Helicopters. Mission Duration 2.7 Hours. Crew: Pilots Major Jason Duggan (RHS) and Captain Jason Otter (LHS); Aircrewman Technician Corporal Garth Pregnell (RHS); Aircrewman LHS Unknown and Aircrewman Technician Sergeant Lee Maloney (RAMP). Pen Camera footage filmed from the helmet of Corporal (Cpl) Garth Pregnell, C Squadron, 5th Aviation Regiment (5 Avn Regt), aboard Australian Army CH-45D Chinook A15-202.
Captain Otter later noted: “The vision was captured utilising a pen camera attached to Cpl Pregnell’s helmet as he mans the right hand M134 Minigun of Chinook A15-202. Crew communications are heard over the aircraft communications system (ICS). The footage commences looking out the right cabin window while tracking north of Kandahar, visible in frame is the M134 Minigun. At 4:50min Cpl Pregnell looks inside the rear cabin. The insertion force can be seen seated along each side of the cabin. The shadow of 202 (9:25-10:00) can be seen moving rapidly over the ground as Chinook 202 tracks over the jagged landscape to the north of Kandahar before tracking south over the Registan Desert. A camel herd is seen at 10:19. At 22:00 the aircraft tracks off the Registan Desert (sand dunes). At 22:40 Cpl Pregnell signals to the ground forces 10 min to landing. From 27:46, walled farms and associated buildings can clearly be seen as the formation moves back onto the Registan Desert at 28:23. At 29:20 just prior to the end of the video Cpl Pregnell passes a 6 min call to the ground forces. The video sequence continues at AWM2020.895.2”.
