Description

Collection of personal and official papers of General Sir Cyril Brudenell Bingham White KCB, KCMG, KCVO, DSO spanning his military career from pre-federation times, through the Boer War, First World War, the inter war period and until his death during the early stages of the Second World War. Includes copies of diaries from 1895-1940; correspondence with figures such as Birdwood, Bridges and Bean; official documents relating to his Defence appointments between the world wars; papers from War Office and Staff College appointments in London prior to the First World War; documents relating to the both the Gallipoli campaign and the Western front; transcripts of speeches and addresses delivered between the wars. (Item list can be found in box 1)

Included in the collection are photocopies of diaries from 1895 to 1940 (in shorthand & longhand). Also photocopies of material, statistics, manuscripts, and news cuttings on subjects including: Defence, Defence Supplies, Special Army Instructions, Army Operation, The Royal Military College, Battle of the Marne, "Australia in the Great War and After", "Christ and National Service", reflections and deductions from the Great War, WW1 song sheets, & material relating to the Australian Press. Also includes photocopies of handwritten plan for the 1918 offensive.

As well as many military papers including: "Withdrawal from Anzac"; Army Corps order no's; article from the coast artillery journal, entitled "The Dardenelles Exhibition"; a map of Anzac; training notes from the war and reports on the military forces of Australia. Souvenirs also feature, including: menus, pamphlets, church services, empire day, General Sir William Birdwood's message to the Anzacs', Christmas 1915, and a programme for a memorial service commemorating Gallipoli. There is also correspondence to & from C.B.B. White, C.E.W. Bean, A.W. Bazley, General Rosenthal, Major Treloar, Major-General Elliot, A.G. Butler, and A. Braithwaite. Subjects vary from: Australian Defence, The Boy Scout Movement, Department of Defence Expenditure estimates, Official War History, Major Treloar's appointment to the AWM and Gavin Long's biography of his father. Also notice to the funeral service of the late Major-General Sir W.T. Bridges, dated 2/9/1915.
