Description

Brass coloured metal matchbox holder, with the Rising Sun badge embossed on one face and 4 Battalion AIF badge embossed, with the text, 'IV NOMINE QUARTUS BATTALION A.I.F AUGUST 17, 1914-1917 GALLIPOLI-LANDING. LONE PINE EVACUATION FRANCE POZIERES. MOUQUET FARM LE BARQUE. DEMICOURT-BOURSIES. BULLECOURT' on the other. Three sides of the holder have elongated openings where the matchbox would be exposed, with the fourth side open for the insertion or removal of the matchbox.

History / Summary

Lieutenant (Lt) James Henry Thomas enlisted with 4 Infantry Battalion on 27 January 1915 and embarked for service on HMAT A55 Kyarra from Sydney, NSW. Lt Thomas saw service in France from 15 December 1917 where he collected items from a captured German Officer. Lt Thomas returned to Australia on HT Wiltshire, 4 July 1919.
