As well as the ubiquitous SLR many Australian troops were armed with the then very new M16 Assault Rifle. Mick as a forward scout would have been armed with an M16A1.

This manual for the M16A1 Assault Rifle was produced for the US Army, but was also used in the Australian Army. Its jocular tone and cartoon diagrams are designed to appeal to the young American serviceman, and are in stark contrast to the usual Army training publications. The language and many of the images used would be considered sexist and/or racist by today’s standards.
