Puckapunyal is an Australian Army training base in central Victoria.  It was standard to have a passing out parade after the new recruits had completed basic training.  Many of the recruits that went through ‘Pucka’ may have been encouraged to join by recruitment posters such as this.

This recruitment poster which was contemporary with the events in the song shows an Australian soldier, looking very much like a soldier from the United States.  The quotation from the journalist Gavin Young on the front perhaps highlights the difference between the Australian and American mindsets of the time, and hence would have appealed to potential Australian servicemen.
