In Townsville, parades were held to farewell each infantry battalion posted to Vietnam.  The battalion would march to the quay to embark on the HMAS Sydney, which was known colloquially as the Vung Tau ferry.  This article from the Townsville Daily Bulletin of 2 May 1969 relates directly to the song.  This copy of the article which belongs to Mick has burnt edges from when their house burned down; the house was lost but the precious photo album was saved.
