Jack Nichols (b. 1921)

In 1943 the National Gallery of Canada commissioned Nichols to depict the activities of the Merchant Navy. He enlisted in the RCNVR in 1944 and worked as an official war artist depicting the Normandy landings and destroyer movements off Brest. Essentially self-taught, he continues to paint his experiences of the war.
