Shared Experience: Yosl Bergner (b. 1920)

Bergner was born in Vienna and spent his childhood in Warsaw. He arrived in Australia in 1937 at the age of 17. He was inspired by European modernism, and his early work was influenced by French artists Daumier, Cézanne and Courbet. He later produced strong social-realist paintings. Bergner enlisted in 1942 and served in an army labour company.
