Working for the Civil Constructional Corps, McClintock was part of manpower initiatives to provide a labour force for the large civil engineering projects across Australia that were necessary for the defence of the country. Even before the war his interest in surrealist art waned and he started to view his subjects from a social realist perspective. The war provided him with subjects he could sketch in the field and complete in his studio. His social-realist paintings celebrate the achievements of men working on these large technological projects.
