Raymond Postgate (1896–1971) was the brother of Bowen’s close friend Margaret. Their father was a strict university professor and the author of Postgate’s Latin grammar.
Raymond was a conscientious objector during the First World War and a journalist for various left-wing newspapers and journals. He was a novelist and biographer, an editor of the Encyclopedia Britannica, and a prolific writer on history, politics, and Marxist philosophy. Later he became a leading commentator on food and dining, and founded the annual Good food guide.
