Group portrait of Captain Lionel Gordon Short and Captain Louis Noedl with a large lamp they have removed from a German tower
Description
Informal group portrait of four soldiers, taken near the Gotha aerodrome at Morville, Belgium, a month before the armistice was signed. In the foreground is the lamp they have removed from a 130-foot tower erected by the Germans at Flavion, two miles from the aerodrome. It is believed that the tower's purpose was to guide night-flying aeroplanes. The officers shown in the photograph, Captain Lionel Gordon Short, 23rd Battalion (second from left) and Captain Louis Noedl, 7th Field Company, Australian Engineers, were responsible for removal of the lamp for the Australian War Memorial.
