Studio portrait of 3705 Private (Pte) Laurence Oliver Bryant, 8th Battalion, of Kyabram, Vic. Formerly of London, England, he arrived in Australia in 1913, aged 17. Pte Bryant was employed as a labourer prior to enlisting in July 1915. He embarked from Adelaide with the 12th Reinforcements on board HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 23 November 1915. They arrived in Egypt in February 1916 and a few weeks later Pte Bryant was transferred to the 5th Division Artillery. In May he was posted to the 58th Battery and promoted to Temporary Bombardier (T/Bdr). He arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 23 June 1916 and on 6 August 1916 was promoted to the rank of Bombardier (Bdr). On 27 Jan 1917 Bdr Bryant was transferred to the 16th Field Artillery Brigade. After leave in England during October 1916, Bdr Bryant was posted to the 6th Brigade Ammunition Column. On 16 May 1918 he was hospitalised with a serious heart condition which was attributed to his military service; perhaps a result of exposure to gas. Laurence Bryant was designated medically unfit due to military service and he departed from England in August 1918, arriving in Australia on 11 October, and was welcomed home to Kyabram on 14 October 1918. Bombardier Bryant died at his parents' farm at 4pm on 27 October 1918. He was 22 years of age.
