Description

Depicts a uniformed portrait of Lieutenant Lawrence Dominic McCarthy, VC, 16th Battalion, A.I.F, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his work on the 23 August 1918 near Madam Wood, east of Vermandovillers, France. A crisis that suddenly developed in front of a British flanking unit, halting its advance and preventing a link-up with the Australians, caused McCarthy to initiate and carry through almost single-handed a series of actions that stabilised the situation and resulted in the capture of the final objective of the attack.
