Australian contingent to take part in the victory parade London. Australian contingent film outtakes.
This film shows the story of the two hundred and fifty servicemen and women who were chosen to represent the RAN, AIF and RAAF at the Victory Parade held in London on 8 June 1946. It starts with the AIF contingent being kitted out and training in marching and arms drill at Watsonia Camp, VIC, and proceeds to show the full contingent marching through Melbourne, VIC, to embark on HMAS Shropshire. Following this are scenes as the contingent marches through Perth, WA. Capetown is the next port of call and then arrival at Portsmouth. Scenes show life in the tented camp in Kensington Gardens and training marches and parades held in the London parks and streets. On 8 June 1946, troops and contingents from all over the Commonwealth and many Allied nations, paraded through the streets of London and along the Mall, where the salute was taken by King George VI, accompanied on the saluting dais by Queen Elizabeth. Later the Australian contingent visited Berlin and then returned to Australia via Gibraltar, Malta, Suez Canal and Colombo. A parade was held in Adelaide, SA, on the return journey.
