Description

Transcript of diaries relating to the First World War service of Lance Corporal Thomas James Richards, 1st Australian Field Ambulance (AFA). This transcript was made of the third bound volume of Richards’ diaries and covers the period 26 January to 8 November 1916. As such the entries detail the return of the 1st AFA to Egypt in early January with the end of the campaign at Gallipoli, and its move to France at the end of March. Once in France, Richards records the treatment of wounded and details his experiences with the 1st AFA as it follows the 1st Division infantry across various theatres of the Western Front. He details the work of the 1st AFA in the Armentieres region in June, and near Albert in July and August when the 1st Division are taking part in the attacks at nearby Pozieres and Mouquet Farm. Richards also records their move to the Ypres sector in late 1916 and return south to the Somme for the winter. This transcript was made by the Australian War Memorial in 1935.
