Description

Metal photograph frame with decorative edging and the emblem of the Royal Australian Air Force attached to the centre of the top edge. The emblem consists of a winged wreath with the letters 'RAAF' surmounted by a King's crown. The frame has a clear plastic front piece and a cardboard mounting frame with a wooden backing.

History / Summary

Associated with 422085 Flight Lieutenant John William Shipman. Shipman served with 100 Squadron, RAAF, and he served as a crewman onboard the Australian War Memorial's Bristol Beaufort Bomber. When that particular aircraft was battled damaged and written off after a crash landing he along with his crewmates then flew another aircraft. Whilst a onboard Bristol Beaufort aircraft A9-650 he was killed in action over Maprik, New Guinea on 13 March 1945. It is believed that a faulty fuse prematurely detonated under the aircraft causing his aircraft to crash. He was laid to rest in Lae War Cemetery, Papua New Guinea with his other three crew mates who were killed.
