Description

Platoon Commander's diary compiled by Lieutenant Austin Y Ellerman containing nominal roll for A Company, 2/29 Battalion and accounts of two separate patrols against the Japanese in Northern Johore in January 1942: Londah Halt Patrol and Muar Road. Also a casualty book (compiled in an 'Admission and Discharge Book', Army Book 27) of the deaths of men of the 2/29 Battalion as prisoners of war through illness and mistreatment at Kanchanabri, Kanchanabri New Hospital Camp, Tarbaya, Kamai Sonkurai and other locations in Thailand between 1943 and 1944. The details include date, place and cause of death. Collection includes a 29 page typescript memoir ('Austin in the Army - Reminiscences') of Ellerman's Second World War service, covering his training in the Bathurst area, active service against the Japanese in Malaya and Singapore, unwilling surrender and experiences as a POW in Changi, forced labour on the Burma Thailand Railway, return to Changi in 1944 and subsequent release.
