One of a series of posters called 'Headlines of History' produced by Newseum and the Office of International Information Programs, US Department of State, in 2002 to mark the anniversary of the events of September 11. Many of the newspaper front pages featured in 'Headlines of History' were first seen together in the 12th of September 2001 exhibit 'Today's Front Pages' produced by the Newseum, Arlington, Virginia. 'Headlines of History' was shown in several places around the world. This poster depicts the front page of The Washington Post, published in Washington DC, on the 12th of September 2001. The main images shows Thick black smoke pouring from the one of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center after terrorists hijacked planes and crashed the first the buildings. The image also shows the second plane about to collide with the other tower. The image below depicts fire fighters battling flames at the Pentagon where terrorist crashed another plane. In the lower left is an image of a Pentagon worker shedding tears. In the lower right is an image of two women clutching each other as they watch the World Trade Center burn. The headline reads 'Terrorists Hijack 4 Airliners Destroy World Trade Center, Hit Pentagon; Hundreds Dead.'
