Description

Letters relating to the First World War service of 2430 Lance Corporal Wilfred Denver Gallwey, 47th Battalion. The letters were written to various members of his immediate family between January and July 1917. In these letters Gallwey describes his visit to London in January, his opinion of men he believed were shirking their duty by remaining at home in Australia, and consistently writes about the pride he took in serving. He writes of the remainder of his training in the cold weather of Codford, including his exposure to chlorine gas as part of gas warfare training, and his subsequent time in France and the French people. Gallwey also describes the fighting at Bullecourt, and his evacuation to an Australian military hospital at Dartford in England after contracting trench fever. Included amongst the letters is an example of a field service postcard and a small leaflet on wartime duty titled: "Play the game, for honour and her." This file contains:
