Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment
The Memorial has approximately 300 staff members and over 200 volunteers from a range of professional and cultural backgrounds.
The Memorial has adopted the Commonwealth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy to promote recruitment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as staff and volunteers.
Some of these strategies include:
- Culturally sensitive recruitment processes, including an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representative on relevant panels.
- Promoting opportunities for engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in collection development and telling stories of military service, including commissions, research projects, and program delivery.
- Hosting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Interns and Secondees from other APS organisations.
- Flexible arrangements recognising cultural, community, and family obligations.

Leave
We offer generous leave arrangements which include 4 weeks annual leave per year, flex leave and purchased leave. In conjunction with local arrangements these leave provisions allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees the flexibility to be available for personal cultural requirements.
Training
We offer all our staff training and development opportunities, including Leadership training for staff at the appropriate levels. Attendance at relevant conferences and seminars is also supported and we have a Studybank scheme that can offer support for students including leave to attend classes and financial reimbursement.
