Researching Australian military service: New Zealand, 1860–66

Overview of the conflict

Australian military history overview: Colonial period, 1788-1901.

Nominal Rolls

L.L. Barton's Australians in the Waikato War 1863–1864 (Sydney: Library of Australian History, 1979) lists all Australian volunteers in the Waikato regiments, giving occupation and enlistment place.

Personal service records

Australian volunteers served in New Zealand, not Australian, regiments. Some service records may be held in Archives New Zealand; refer to Archives New Zealand Reference Guide 3 (War).

Those who died while serving

As Australians who served in these wars fought in New Zealand (not Australian) regiments, their names do not appear on the Memorial's Roll of Honour. The Roll of Honour introduction provides detailed information about Roll of Honour eligibility.

Where they served

F. Glen, For glory and a farm: the story of Australia's involvement in the New Zealand Wars of 1860–1866 (Whakatane, NZ: Whakatane & District Historical Society, 1984)
