There is joy and exhilaration evident in this painting. Rationing is still in place but the table is all cakes and tarts. The coloured streamers and flags are sparse decorations but the sense of relief is clear. Nothing concerns or worries the gathered guests, celebrating in the street in a natural response to the end of the war in Europe.
