PALESTINE, MIDDLE EAST, CIRCA 1914-16. PHOTOGRAPH OF W. HUDSON FYSH OF THE 3RD AUSTRALIAN LIGHT HORSE REGIMENT AND THE 1ST AUSTRALIAN LIGHT HORSE MACHINE-GUN SQUADRON. FYSH LATER TRANSFERRED TO THE AUSTRALIAN FLYING CORPS AS AN OBSERVER, GAINING THE RANK OF LIEUTENANT IN NO 1 SQUADRON. HE EARNED THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS AND AFTER THE WAR WAS ALLOWED TO QUALIFY AS A PILOT. HE LATER WENT ON TO BECOME THE FOUNDER OF QANTAS AND RECEIVED HIS KNIGHTHOOD IN 1953.
