Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant Lindsay Robert Turner, 53rd Field Artillery Battery (5th Division Artillery), France. The collection consists of seven diaries handwritten by Lieutenant Turner covering from the time he embarked in late 1917 to mid 1919 when he was discharged following a severe gun shot wound to the face. The diaries give details of his training on Salisbury Plain (UK) and descriptions of life on the battlefields of France, including at Villers-Bretonneux, Morlancourt, Amiens, Peronne and the Hindenburg Line. Also included is a troopship serial for artillerymen "The limber log" from 1917 produced on the ship on which he embarked.
