Dickin Medal

Pigeon T139’s Dickin Medal.
Introduced during the Second World War, the Dickin Medal was awarded by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals to animals that had displayed outstanding gallantry or service in wartime. The Medal has been awarded 74 times since 1943. The recipients comprise 37 dogs, 32 pigeons, 4 horses and 1 cat. In 2014 an Honorary Dickin Medal was awarded to War Horse Warrior to honour all the animals that served in the First World War.
