What is it?
This uniform is like those worn by Royal Australian Navy (RAN) personnel during the Second World War. It includes a white hat, commonly known as a “duck cap”, with a black silk ribbon around the base identifying the name of the ship the wearer served on. During the latter part of the Second World War, however, many ribbons bore only the letters “HMAS” or “RAN” for security reasons.
Sailors also wore a white front, as well as a blue jean square rig collar, which was divided into three sections. The two outer sections came together in a “V” at the front, while the square section sat at the back. The uniform also included a white rope lanyard, and a black silk.
